So many high-profile film studios have long since started using camera-equipped drones for any kind of aerial footage recording. Commercials, music videos, press conferences and so many other usage scenarios became more appealing thanks to their functionality.

The three products in our test offer a nice combination of features and offer impressive flight characteristics. These are purpose built to record media, however, that doesn’t mean that they are not fun to fly. In fact, these are among some of the fastest machines that we tested and they also offer impressive flight ranges. All three come with a great battery autonomy that ensures long flight times. DBPOWER is a well know manufacturer among drone hobbyists thanks to its “Predator” series of products. We’ve tested its UDI U842 FPV equipped quadcopter and found that it offers a nice set of features and a superb camera quality at an affordable price. Let’s see the specifics that make this a great enthusiast FPV system.

Specification

  • Drone size: 19.1 x 19.1 x 4.8 inches
  • Drone weight: 0.5 pounds
  • Built-in 6-axis gyroscope for precise hovering in the sky
  • Real-Time HD FPV transmission over Wi-Fi
  • Gravity induction system – direction heading control
  • Headless safety function
  • Altitude hold and hover function
  • 2 high capacity batteries included
  • Operating range up to 100 meters
  • Low-battery warning alarm
  • HD video and picture recording
  • Safety LED lights

What’s in the package?

We were pleasantly surprised with the contents of the retail package. Besides the quadcopter, you also receive a remote controller, two 3.7 Volts 1000 mAh batteries, USB charging cable, four spare propeller blades, 4GB MicroSD memory card and a user manual.

Features and Flight performance

The U842 Predator is very fun to fly around. Although we are not so sure about the name for this model. We find it inappropriate since this drone has a tough time flying in the windy conditions. Due to the lightweight construction, it struggles even with weaker wind gusts.

When the conditions are right – this lightweight flyer shines. It flies fast and turns sharp so the flight performance is actually great. There is a handy “gravity induction” system that pairs it with your mobile phone. This way you can turn your phone in all direction and control the U842 movements. This is really good way of flying the agile quadcopter. Especially for beginners.

The FPV system offers an HD quality of the videos in real-time which make for an immersive flying experience. You can use your phone and a VR headset to enjoy your every flying session. The connection is stable and the video feed is decent quality. The included 4GB MicroSD memory card really does come handy when you want to record videos and photos. Users will have to know that the memory will get filled quickly when recording in HD resolution.

Battery life is pretty amazing. Perhaps this is due to the lightweight construction of this quadcopter. Nevertheless, we almost always got around 15 minutes of flying from a single battery. Since there is a spare one included – with a quick swap you can extend the flight time to almost half an hour! This is really rare to find in a quadcopter at this price range. We also liked the alarm feature that notifies you when the battery gets low during flight. When it comes to recharging, it will take around 2 hours to get an empty battery back to full charge level.

Conclusion

It’s pretty obvious that this is a beginners quadcopter drone. Once you get the clear skies there is nothing stopping you from enjoying U842 and immersing yourself in its High definition FPV system. This is a great product with an affordable price tag.

DJI are the most famous commercial drone manufacturer in the world. Their Phantom series of products has proven itself as a great tool for both professional and amateur users. We had the pleasure of using and testing their Phantom 3 Standard drone kit and we were really impressed with its performance.

Specification

  • Drone size: 15 x 14 x 8.2 inches
  • Drone weight: 2.7 pounds
  • GPS Satellite navigation and position tracking
  • GPS and compass based waypoint navigation
  • Auto-tracking mode
  • Remote control via app
  • 2.7K video quality at 30 fps
  • 12 Megapixel camera resolution
  • A high capacity Li-PO battery included
  • Operating range up to 1000 meters

What’s in the package?

DJI usually doesn’t disappoint when it comes to accessories that you get for your money. Considering the high asking price for this “Standard” kit, we can’t say that we were thrilled with what’s inside the retail box. Besides the quadcopter and the remote controller, you also get a universal charger, a single high capacity battery, two sets of spare propellers and a user manual.

Features and Flight performance

As expected – the flight performance is great. The Phantom 3 flies stable in all weather conditions and moves effortlessly in all directions. The powerful motors propel it with ease. It’s a lot of fun to fly it fast. Not even stronger winds can hinder its stability. We really liked the flight assistant feature that allowed us to leave remote controls and focus on operating only the camera. This system allows the Phantom 3 to follow GPS waypoints and fly autonomously. The flying range is exceptional and you can fly this quadcopter well over a mile from your starting position.

The main feature of this drone is its camera. It is one of the best that we ever tested. The resolution is 2.7K HD which is 2704 x 1524 pixels. This will satisfy even professional movie makers, that’s for sure. The recorded footage is smooth and stable thanks to a great gimbal system that holds the camera in place. The photos also look great. They are shot in 12 Megapixel resolution. The only nitpick that we can point out is that both videos and photos recorded in low light conditions exhibit a lot of noise and artefacts.

The battery is a high voltage 15.2 Volts 4480 mAh capacity. This means that motors can draw plenty of power for maximum performance while still retaining good flight times. We managed more than 25 minutes on average. A great result for a drone with this weight. The quick swap system allows quick change of empty batteries with the full ones. We only wish that another spare battery came included in the package. The charging is pretty quick and takes less than an hour and a half.

Conclusion

The Phantom 3 is a professional tool that is also accessible to amateur drone flyers. It offers unparalleled camera quality at this price range coupled with great flight performance. The flight range and great battery life are unmatched by the competition.

The retail package is filled with useful equipment and accessories. We can safely say that the customers get a lot for their money. The included ST10 + Remote Controller is a quality piece of equipment that offers low latency and long range transmission.

You also get a ground transmission station that ensures a stable connection between you and the quadcopter camera feed. The SteadyGrip handheld stabilised camera holder is a great addition for filming on the go. There are two 11V 5400 mAh batteries also included along with a proprietary battery charger. Other accessories include two sets of four spare propellers, an accessory kit and the standard user manual. Overall, this is a very well-equipped model.

Features and Flight performance

The Q500 4K is nimble and fast in the air. It moves so fast that it can quickly get beyond visual range. The climb rates are amazing and we could manage to get it 3000 feet up which was well beyond our visual range. The rated speed is around 15 MPH and in practice, we could easily achieve this speed. The flight stability is exceptional and not even stronger winds can affect this capable drone.

The onboard CGO3 4K camera makes superb quality videos and photos. The footage remains smooth and jitter free even during windy flying conditions. Camera stability is taken care of by the 3-axis gimbal. Users should be aware that the FPV real-time video transmission has a limited range of 300 feet. Notable features also include automated GPS waypoint tracking and Return Home feature.

High capacity battery ensures around 20 minutes of individual flight time. It’s nice to see that there are two included which significantly prolongs recording sessions. The proprietary charger refills a single battery in less than an hour and a half.

Conclusion

It is understandable why the Q500 4K is the alternative go to camera quadcopter drone. It makes superb photos and videos and comes packed with plenty of features and equipment. This is a standout professional tool for aerial movie makers.

Choosing The Best Drone with Camera:
What to Look for?

Camera drones have taken over when it comes to making any sort of aerial video and photo footage. Their use brought the cost down for filmmakers and producers significantly. In the past, any sort of aerial footage was recorded with helicopters, aeroplanes and purpose built gliders. They had to be equipped with specialised camera equipment which was not that practical and cost effective. With the widespread availability of quality portable camera-equipped drones, most of the production teams opt to switch to this method of filmmaking. There are plenty of commercials and feature films that used camera drones to create stunning videos of landscapes and even footage of high-speed action sequences.

Before deciding which model you should choose for your type of aerial recording we suggest paying attention to some simple guidelines. They will assist you to pick the right model for your needs.

Getting the right amount of camera pixels

This is, without a doubt, the most important aspect of each camera. It defines the resolution and the quality of detail that you can expect from the recorded footage. You should pay attention since resolution numbers do not necessarily guarantee quality. Most often you can find drones equipped with 4K, 2.7K, Full HD and HD video resolution cameras. The 4K is the current video standard of the highest attainable quality. It is not yet so widespread as 2K and Full HD so do not waste your money unless you have a compatible display where you intend to play back your recordings. For amateur and beginner operators, the Full HD 1080p cameras will do just fine.

Getting the right amount of camera pixels

Smooth and jitter-free videos

If you intend to capture stunning photos and videos of landscapes, then make sure to have a drone with a camera gimbal. We also suggest picking the ones with cameras that include optical and digital stabilisation system. Without these features, all your recorded footage will be useless. Choppy videos and blurry photos occur because of the vibrations coming from drone motors and wind turbulence.

Smooth and jitter-free videos

Having enough power

By this, we mean having both powerful motors and durable battery packs. If you plan on doing serious aerial filmmaking, ensure that your drone can withstand stronger winds found at higher altitudes and have enough juice to last at least 15 minutes in the air.

Buy spare batteries that will extend your filming session. Make sure to take at least 10-minute breaks between battery swaps and going back up in the air. This will prolong the life of the motors.

Navigation and automation

If you intend to focus on media recording, then we suggest picking the models equipped with GPS and waypoint automation features. This way you can pre-set the route where your drone will be flying over and focus on shooting videos and photos.

Following these simple guidelines will ensure that you obtain the right drone for the job. Do not bother wasting money on features you do not need as you can always upgrade later if your requirements go up.

Conclusion

All three of the tested camera quadcopters left a strong impression during our time with them. We have to say that they all offer incredible value when it comes to features and performance in the real world. However, not all three are perfect and some have stronger disadvantages than the others.

The weakest performer when it comes to flight performance is the DBPOWER UDI U842 quadcopter. While it does offer good quality media recording capabilities it lacks flight stability. We find that to be unacceptable. The limitation of it having to be used in ideal conditions is truly restrictive. If you do not mind flying this model only when the conditions are ideal, then it really represents a good value package.

Our choice for the best ones comes down between DJI Phantom 3 Standard and Yuneec Q500 4K. Each performed great and left us very impressed. The Phantom has a poor set of included accessories which are costly to buy separately. On the other hand, Q500 4K comes packed with plenty of high-quality equipment.

in the end, we feel that Yuneec Q500 4K offers more value for your money. As such we can recommend it as being the best camera drone of the three in our testing. Highly recommended for professional filmmakers.
