  • Long recharging times

Anyone looking for a camera quadcopter that is great for beginners should consider Syma’s X5C model. It’s compact and easy to fly which makes it great for first-time drone flyers. It includes several useful features which make flying easier. There are plenty of cheap spare parts available too in case you crash it. This little drone is a capable flyer and will provide you with so much fun. Thanks to its compact size it can even be flown indoors.

Specification

  • Drone size: 16.5 x 12.2 x 3.8 inches
  • Drone weight: 1.6 pounds
  • Built-in 6-axis gyroscope for precise hovering
  • Wind-resistant
  • Performs 3D flips
  • HD video and picture recording
  • 7 minutes of flight time
  • Safety LED lights

What’s in the package?

The retail box includes only the essential stuff. We wish Syma included an additional battery at least. We understand that this is a budget product however competition includes more spare parts. What you get is the X5C quadcopter with the HD camera already attached. Also included are the 2.4 GHz remote controller, user manual, four protection frames, two landing skids, a 3.7 Volts Li-PO (lithium – polymer) battery with a 500 mAh capacity and a screwdriver that you can use for assembly of the included parts.

Features and Flight performance

The Syma X5C performs great both in outdoors and indoors flight. Even in windy conditions, it managed to keep a level flight. Very impressive for a drone at this price. Flying it was a pleasure as it is very stable and responsive. It is also very fun thanks to the 360-degree flips and rolls feature. Performing fun acrobatic moves drains the battery faster so users should keep that in mind. The included HD camera is fixed in place and it offers decent quality video and photo recording.

The battery lasts around 7 minutes on average and the recharging can take a little less than two hours. Performing flips and making hard turns will bring the flight time down to 5 minutes. This is expected from the included battery. Thankfully batteries aren’t expensive so we recommend buying additional ones.

Conclusion

We can recommend the Syma X5C to beginner flyers who would like to experience the thrills of quadcopter flying. The included HD camera makes decent videos and images and it is a great addition found at this price range. We only wish the battery lasted a bit longer and that Syma had also included a spare one in the box. Overall this is a fun little flyer at an unbeatable price.

One of the best mini-drone on sale today is made by Holy Stone. The HS170 Predator quadcopter is feature packed and a great flyer too. You won’t have to spend a lot to get a great beginner friendly drone that offers stable and fun flight performance. Once you get comfortable with the basics you can engage expert mode and turn this little drone into a true racer.

Specification

  • Drone size: 5.3 x 1.6 x 5.3 inches
  • Drone weight: 0.9 pounds
  • Uses a 2.4 GHz Anti-Interference technology for remote
  • Built-in 6-axis gyroscope for precise hovering
  • Headless Mode for easier flight
  • Performs 3D flips and rolls
  • Wind-resistant
  • HD video and picture recording
  • Control range of up to 50 meters
  • 8 minutes of flight time
  • Fast charging
  • Safety LED lights

What’s in the package?

Holy Stone offers plenty of accessories in the box. The retail package includes the compact size HS170 Predator quadcopter, 2.4 GHz Anti – interference remote controller and a 3.7 Volts 350 mAh Li-Ion battery. Accessories include four additional propeller blades, USB charging cable, user manual and a screwdriver for assembly of the included parts.

Features and Flight performance

As we suspected – this is a great all-rounder quadcopter drone for beginners. It offers a stable and smooth flight even when the winds get stronger. The barometer and the gyroscope will keep it in a hover mode level flight with a switch of the button. The HS170 Predator is very responsive to controls and it turns fast and sharp. The included “Headless” mode locks the direction movement in front and rear motion orientation. This makes flying easier and more controllable for beginners.

Once you switch to the “Advanced” mode via the remote you get a very fast and manoeuvrable flyer. The speed increases as well as climb and turn rates. The “Predator” transforms into a true racer drone. This mode is so much fun although we don’t advise beginners to use it from the start. Use this mode only once you’ve gotten comfortable with the controls.

The battery can last up to 15 minutes of non-intensive flight. This includes flying without performing those fun aerial flips and rolls. Acrobatics and the advanced flight mode will drain the battery much faster. Recharging times are good and it takes around an hour in a half to get an empty battery back to full capacity.

Conclusion

The Holy Stone HS170 is a great quadcopter for both beginner and advanced users. We had so much fun with it during our testing. But before rushing to buy it on the account of the cheap price consider the lack of customer support and some build quality issues. Overall this is a great beginners drone with plenty of great features and only some minor drawbacks.

Pros
  • Fun to fly
  • Agile and fast
  • Relatively crash durable

Cons
  • Small size can be troublesome for outdoor use
  • Few accessories included

The smallest out of the tested quadcopters – The Hubsan X4 is a capable performing drone, nevertheless. You might even write it off on your buying list by thinking it was meant to be flown indoors only. However, this is entirely wrong thinking. Not only is this tiny quadcopter drone great to fly indoors – it is even better when flown outdoors. Read on to learn about great features this mini-drone offers.

Specification

  • Drone size: 2.4 x 2.4 x 1 inches
  • Drone weight: 1.3 ounces
  • Built to endure crashes
  • 4 Channel 2.4 GHz Remote Controller
  • Built-in 6-axis gyroscope for a stable flight
  • Performs 3D flips and rolls
  • Uses a high capacity battery
  • Fast charging
  • Safety LED lights

What’s in the package?

When we first opened the retail box we were surprised by the compact size of the X4 drone. Sadly, the included number of accessories isn’t large as well. Besides the quadcopter, the package includes the 2.4 GHz Remote Controller, one 1S 320 mAh Li-PO type battery and an USB charger. We can’t say we are surprised by the humble package. This is the cheapest model of the three tested so lacklustre set of accessories doesn’t come as a surprise.

Features and Flight performance

This palm-sized drone quadcopter sure flies around fast. The heaviest part of it is the battery so that means it’s really fast at turning and vertical climbs. It is advertised for beginner flyers and we have to warn you to go easy with the throttle controls at first. We managed to crash it a couple of times since we pushed the throttle too hard. We were surprised by the lack of the prop guards in the retail box. After all, this drone is advertised as being durable. Lucky for us we didn’t break any of the props during those accidental crashes.

The joystick is really sensitive so start by going slow with it. Thankfully both the trim and control sensitivity can be adjusted. Beginners should calibrate controls to somewhere around the 20 percent setting. Anything above that is meant for use by the more experienced flyers.

Once you get the feel for controls this little drone becomes so much fun to fly around. Indoor control is excellent, unlike outdoors use. The difficulty change when going outdoors doesn’t have anything to do with the controls. It’s about the size of the quadcopter. It is so small that it quickly gets out of the visual range. So, even when you’re outdoors you’re going to have to fly it close or you will lose it.

The 320 mAh battery doesn’t sound like its high capacity yet you have to consider the small size of the object it is powering. On average, it can last up 8 minutes of flight time which is a decent result. On the plus side charging from empty to full capacity takes only 45 minutes.

Conclusion

The Hubsan X4 is a great little drone. It will offer plenty of fun times for both novice and more advanced users. There are very few downsides to this very good performer. Considering that it is cheap – it will be a great choice for those looking to buy their first drone.

Choosing the Best Mini Drone:
What to Look for?

Most of the drones found in this price range are intended for novice users. To be honest you always get what you pay for so this is the case when it comes to cheaper quadcopter models. We have to mention that the features that are included are nice and very useful. Especially for beginners. If this is your first time buy, then you definitely need to know a couple of things before buying any of these three models.

Flight behaviour and safety

Mini drones are very fast and mobile. Thanks to their compact size and low weight they can be a lot of fun to fly around. Their smaller size and lower weight have some obvious disadvantages. The wind can be a nightmare for any beginner drone user. These low mass quadcopters will get swept away in stronger winds and you will quickly lose them if you’re not careful. The golden rule for beginner drone users is to fly slow and low. Keeping your brand new little flyer close will ensure that you do not lose it as soon as you take it out for a first flight.

Mind your surrounding as these are high speed moving objects. You can easily break windows and even hurt someone if you are not careful. Read the instruction manual and go online to watch some videos first. Videos from other users will help you learn the basics faster. Go slow with the throttle controls. Get a feel for the movement speed.

If you are looking for a fast mover that will satisfy your piloting skills after you learn the basics, then the Holy Stone HS170 Predator is the drone for you. It can go very fast and it manoeuvres great. The agility in flight is simply amazing and it is our favourite one of the three models that we’ve tested.

FLIGHT BEHAVIOUR AND SAFETY

Quite opposite in terms of performance is the Syma X5C. This is a well-known quadcopter that offers a smooth and safe flight. It is a go to drone for beginner users so it’s no wonder it is a bestseller. The X5C is easy to fly and very easy to control. The included HD cam offers additional value to the package. If you want a reliable and durable yet easy to use, first drone, then look no further.

The best way to describe Hubsan’s X4 (H107L) model is to say that it strikes balance between features of the other two quadcopters that we’ve tested. It is palm sized and way smaller than most so it flies great even in close quarters. You do not have to worry about the weather conditions with this one. It is nimble and fast and so much fun. However, the battery life is not that great.

All three offer so much joy and will surely be a great learning tool for new users. Even when you decide to buy a more expensive quadcopter you will occasionally come back to your mini-drones for some unrestrained fun time.

Conclusion

These are all fine affordable quadcopters and as you can see each one comes with some advantages and disadvantages. If you mostly plan to fly indoors then choosing the compact sized drone is the way to go. Thus, Hubsan X4 (H107L) is a perfect choice. For an all-rounder in both performance and features then your best option is Syma X5C model. The only tested model coming with an onboard HD camera will bring you, even more, possibilities and fun.

Holy Stone HS170 is the most versatile quadcopter out of three and we found that it offers a great feature set at a modest price. Thus, it will be an excellent choice for users who are unsure of their piloting skills. All three of these models are excellent for quadcopter novices and you won’t make the wrong decision no matter which one you choose. Each of these models will be a great first step towards bigger and more powerful quadcopter drones that you will want to own and fly in the future.
