What’s in the package?

The retail package includes all the necessary basics that you would need to start flying. We can’t say that we were surprised when we opened the box. Only the essentials are included. You get a remote controller, USB charging cable, one 3.7V 750 mAh Li-Po battery and the user manual. We were nicely surprised with the included four spare propeller blades. Since new users go through a lot of crashes and broken props, the spare ones will come in handy.

Features and Flight performance

This compact quadcopter is really fun to fly using the FPV mode. It offers a unique experience when viewing the real-time camera footage via the mobile phone screen. It is very manoeuvrable and also very easy to fly. There are three settings – low, medium and high that can change flight behaviour of the drone.

The low setting is great for beginners as it slows down the throttle response and also makes the little quadcopter fly and turn slower. The headless mode makes flying it even easier as it locks the movement heading into only two directions. Front and back. On the other hand, the medium and advanced settings turn this tame flyer into a racing beast. In both of these modes, the speed and turn rates increase dramatically. The control distance is well beyond 100 meters and it is very easy to lose sight off the quadcopter when it’s moving fast. We recommend using these flight settings only once you’ve mastered controls in the low setting mode.

The flights last around 8 minutes on average thanks to a large capacity battery. The charging times are not so great and it can take around two hours to recharge the battery in full.

Conclusion

We would recommend the MJX X400W as a great beginner racing quadcopter. The included FPV system is a great bonus as it increases the fun factor. Overall, this is a great affordable racer drone for users who are looking to buy their first quadcopter.

Other accessories include a 3S 1500mAh Li-PO battery, balancing charger, spare propellers and four AA batteries for the remote controller. The package includes all you will need to start flying in no time at all.

Features and Flight performance

This is a racing machine that includes high power 2280kV brushless motors. We were stunned by the speed the Vusion 250 Extreme is capable of. We are certain that we flew it at more than 40 MPH! So, it is nice that it’s advertised as being fairly resistant to crashes. Although, we think this is only valid at much slower speeds. In case you get to break any part, it can easily be replaced as the whole drone is modular.

The flight performance is superb. The Vusion 250 climbs and turns at incredible speeds and as such requires a lot of flying experience. This is a purpose-built machine made for races and the included FPV system compliments it well. The video feed is good quality and helps a lot for precision flying. The included transmission system offers stable connection and zero-lag controls. We didn’t find the range limit so users are only restricted with the battery level.

The high-power motors drain the battery fast. The battery will last around 6 minutes on average on each flight. Luckily charging takes only an hour and a half.

Conclusion

The Vusion 250 Extreme is a racing focused quadcopter. We can only recommend it to more experienced users as it takes quite a bit of skill to fly it as intended. This is the fastest quadcopter that we ever tested.

Cons
  • Might be too fast for beginners
  • “Return home” feature doesn’t work every time

The U818A is another great racing drone made by DBPOWER. It offers great flight performance and it also comes with an onboard FPV system. Just by looking at it, we can see that it can take some punishment and we were certain that it will survive frequent crashes. Also, the design of its body is very streamlined and aerodynamic which makes for great handling and control. Let’s find out if it lived up to our expectations during the testing phase.

Specification

  • Drone size: 13.4 x 13 x 3.6 inches
  • Drone weight: 0.35 pounds
  • Built-in 6-axis gyroscope for precise hovering in the sky
  • Gravity induction system – direction heading control
  • Headless safety function
  • 2 high capacity batteries included
  • Operating range up to 80 meters
  • Low-battery warning alarm
  • Safety LED lights

What’s in the package?

We were very pleased with the retail package content. You get plenty of spares and even a 4GB Micro SD card for recording videos and photos of your flights. There are two 7.4 Volts 700 mAh Li-PO batteries included which will make your flying sessions last longer. The four spare propeller blades will ensure easy replacements in case of crashes that might break the props that came with the drone. Besides that, there is also a 2.4 GHz remote controller, USB charging cable and a basic user manual included too.

Features and Flight performance

We were definitely right about the streamlined body aerodynamics of U81A drone. It allows for very good manoeuvring capabilities and most of all – a fun flight. The quadcopter races across the sky with almost no effort and changes directions quickly. It responds to controls instantly and allows quick changes of heading direction.

It comes with two flight performance settings – low and high. As you can guess, the low setting is for beginners and it slows the movement rates and allows more stable flights. It cuts down the speed too and makes flying the drone a lot easier. The “Return home” feature even brings back the drone to starting position. We found that it didn’t work every time, though.

On the other hand, the high mode removes all limits and turns U818A into a racing machine. And a very fun one, at that. The flips and roll are fun at first although we got bored pretty soon. Also, making such acrobatic moves too often will drain the battery faster.

The FPV camera system offers an HD quality video transmission and adds a new level of immersion to flights. This is thanks to the VR mode when you use your phone with the Google Cardboard compatible headset. The quality of recorded videos and photos is great.

When it comes to the battery life this quadcopter doesn’t disappoint. Our flights lasted up to 10 minutes on average. Since you get two batteries in the package you can easily swap the used one out and fly twice as long in one session. Recharging takes around an hour and a half.

Conclusion

You should seriously consider U818A quadcopter as it strikes a nice balance between flight performance and battery life. The onboard FPV system is really good and offers so much immersion. The number of included accessories in the box make this drone a very good buy.

Choosing the Best Racing Drone:
What to Look for?

The first thing that comes to mind when choosing the racing drone would be speed. Right? You’d be very wrong to think like that. Having a high-speed drone can spell trouble if it is not easy to control. Some of these commercial flyers reach speed well above 40 MPH and they can cause serious damage if not flown properly. All of the three quadcopter models that we’ve tested are easy to fly and respond well to controls. Even new users will find them useful for learning the basics of drone flying.

Speed is the name of the game

Drone racing popularity is growing fast. After several high-profile tournaments with substantial money prices, more and more hobbyists are taking an interest. Viewing videos online is not the same as real world experience so there are a lot of crashes and destroyed equipment. This is an expensive hobby, mind you, so taking the time to learn the basics of flight control is a top priority. These models are very agile and move fast during climbs and turns. Controlling them efficiently also requires good reflexes and fast reaction times.

Speed is the name of the game

Users should prefer drone models with brushless motors

Brushless motors are more durable than the cheaper ones and can withstand more stress. Racing includes sharp turns and twists so these motors will provide more endurance and last longer. These types of motors will eventually burn out so make sure that you buy spares for replacement.

Smooth and jitter-free videos

Pick drones with modular design or those that have cheaper spare parts

As we already mentioned, crashes could be very expensive. Finding spare parts should be a number one priority from the moment you buy your racer drone. Always have spares as there is always the possibility that some component can malfunction or break in case of an accident during a flight.

Use large and open areas for your flight sessions

These machines move very fast. A single moment of distraction can lead to accidents. Make sure that you fly them where there are no people and always mind your surroundings. Watch out for birds as you can seriously injure them if you are not careful enough. Start flying through obstacles only when you’ve mastered the controls. For some people, it will take months until they reach advanced levels of drone flight control.

Always pack up a couple of spare batteries

The high-performance motors pull more power from the batteries. Using only one will leave you disappointed with few minutes of flight time. Switching empty batteries with new ones will enable you to fly longer. Just make sure to leave the motors to cool down in between battery swaps. Usually, 5 to 10 minutes of rest will ensure that the motors will last longer and perform to their maximum specified power.

Following these simple rules will make you enjoy this hobby more and keep you coming back often for some fun flying time. Always be mindful of your surrounding when flying and always scout out the open area before your flights. Safety always comes first.

Always pack up a couple of spare batteries

Conclusion

While all of the three tested models offer impressive racing capability only one managed to leave us with a strong impression. We do not recommend any of them for indoor flying so users should have that in mind. They are all stable even in stronger winds so you shouldn’t worry about flights in not so ideal conditions.

DBPOWER MJX 400W is a perfect beginner quadcopter that achieves high-speed manoeuvres. Coming with three flight difficulty settings – it will be a perfect choice for novice users. The U818A model from the same manufacturer offers even greater flying speeds and more advanced controls. We would define this model as an ideal racer drone for both beginner and advanced hobbyists.

On the other hand, the RISE Vusion 250 Extreme is the purpose-made racing quadcopter. It is the best drone on our test with nice features and a great set of accessories. The flying performance of this racer will satisfy even the most demanding user and yet even beginner will be able to fly it with ease.
